Lilure Maedreau Peppers Staggs, age 79, of Rosemark, Tennessee, went to be with the Lord at 12:05 pm on Thursday, April 4, 2024, held by her daughter Marsha, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law in El Cajon, California. She was born on August 16, 1944 to parents “Big Daddy” James Henry and “Big Mama” Rossie Mae Peppers, in West Helena, Arkansas, and was one of eleven children.
Maedreau was a prayer warrior and care-giver. Her strong faith that The Lord would hear and answer prayer drove nearly every small and large decision in her life. She would bravely travel to any place, sacrifice her own health, and endure any hardship to care for a sick family member. In her final days, she would say she knew how hard it was to care for her because she cared for others. She left this world for her promised heaven with her blue eyes wide open and a smile on her thin face.
She loved her church family at First Baptist Church of Atoka, where she had been attending since 2002. When her health took a turn, she faithfully participated in services via YouTube, and never missed a Sunday, sang along with the congregation, and encouraged her Pastor, even from her residence in California. A loving wife, mother, sister, friend, and grandmother, or “Grandmaw” as the little ones called her, Maedreau Staggs will be dearly missed.
She is survived by her lifelong friend, Irene Baugh; daughter and son-in-law, Melissa and Raymond Dicks; daughter and son-in-law, Marsha and Dan Hall; grandchildren, Ray (Tara) James, Josiah James, Jeremiah Dicks, Daniel (Renay) Hall, Jr., David (Sarah) Hall, Jonathan Hall, Benjamin Hall, and Philip Hall; great-grandchildren, Nick, Seth, Kaitie, Natalie, Elaina, Erik, Leanna, Kalab, Diana, Mia, and David; her siblings, Junior Peppers and Glenda Boese, and her siblings-in-law, Ava Nell and Blossom.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Simon Cyughlin Staggs; her parents, James Henry and Rossie Mae Evans Peppers; her siblings, Orela Mae Thompson, Arnie Peppers, Willie Peppers, Curtiss Peppers, J. C. Peppers, Lonie Peppers, R. V. Peppers, Brenda Nichols, and; and two siblings-in-law, Samuel “Bubber” Staggs and Gloria Mae Staggs.
Visitation for friends and family will be held from 5 pm until 7 pm on Friday, April 12th at Covington Funeral Home, as well as from 11 am to 1 pm at First Baptist Church of Atoka on Saturday, April 13th, 2024. The funeral service will begin at 1 pm at the church, with interment to follow in Indian Creek Cemetery, where she will be laid to rest beside her husband. Reverend Freeman Weems will officiate the services, and Daniel Hall, Jr., David Hall, Jonathan Hall, Josiah James, Benjamin Hall, and Philip Hall will be serving as pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, donations to assist with expenses may be made to Marsha Hall in Mrs. Maedreau’s memory.
